Pull request vs. direct push

Choose a safer review workflow for GitHub handoff.

A pull request gives a developer or team a chance to review changes before merging. Direct push is faster but higher risk, especially on the default branch.

How to use this

  1. 1Use a pull request when another person should review the change.
  2. 2Use direct push only when you understand the repository impact.
  3. 3Read the summary before merging or deploying.
  4. 4Keep production deployment separate from the handoff decision.

Keep in mind

  • Direct push to main should be treated as a high-impact action.
  • Branch workflows are better for client or team review.
  • GitHub branch protections may block direct pushes.
